Recently I had the opportunity to ask writer and director Robert Mearns a couple of questions about his film Prank’d and this is what he had to say:

What is Prank’d about? 

“PRANK’D is a horror/mystery/thriller and the story of a group of popular, good looking but cruel pranksters who cover up the death of a high school prank gone horribly wrong. A few years later, they find themselves on the wrong end of the joke as they are stalked by a masked serial killer who designs their deaths after the pranks they played back in high school.” – Robert Mearns

 
What was it like working with Juniper Post? 
 
“My experience with Juniper Post was wonderful! Being a first time director, I wanted people around me who were talented and creative. But I also wanted people who cared and were conscientious. David Kitchens and David Barber worked under a really difficult time constraint, our movie had to be delivered by a set date, and nothing was spared, no corners cut. What mattered most was quality and in the end the Juniper staff had as much passion for PRANK’D as did I. Needless to say, I am deeply appreciative and forever grateful for all of their excellent work!

Lee Madsen on working with Juniper Post: “I can’t say enough about the importance of sound design and the team you choose to do the sound for your film, and that’s exactly why I went back to Juniper Post for my most recent film HATED. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Juniper Post on my last two films. Simply said, they are amazing at what they do as well as being incredibly professional and fun people – bonus! I’m an Independent Filmmaker and an adjunct Professor at DePaul University and I believe sound design to be as valuable as story, cinematography, direction, editing and performance. You can shoot a great looking movie with excellent performances but if the sound isn’t up to par the audience will notice – and what a shame because it’s so much work to make a film. Let me say it again – it takes so much time, energy and hard work to make a film that you need to always remember the absolute importance and impact of great sound. SXSW Film Festival 2014

Juniper Post Owner and Sound Supervor, David Kitchens, attended the 2014 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Here are some of the highlights of this experience: 

SKYWALKER SOUND
David had the privilege of attending The Emotional Language of Film with Skywalker Sound presentation at SXSW. With a front row seat, David and the other attendees, sat in the packed Vimeo Theater waiting for presenter Pete Horner of Skywalker Sound to take the stage. Here’s some of the wisdom that Mr. Horner shared with those lucky enough to attend:

  • “… a lot of people think sound design is making cool stuff, lasers and things. That’s part of it, but for me it’s about asking, ‘What is that character on the screen feeling?'”
  • “The idea is not that sound is the emotional language of film. The idea is that there are many emotional languages to the film, and our job is to translate those emotions.”
  • Horner also shared a piece of advice that had been given to him from his friend and mentor, Walter Murch, “When you send an intern to get the sound, you’ll get that sound, if you’re lucky. If you send a sound designer, the microphone becomes a divining rod.” Quotes from Richard Whittaker’s article “Sound It Out: Skywalker Sound’s Pete Horner on what makes sound design sing” in The Austin Chronicle.
 
VERONICA MARS 
Veronica Mars had it’s world premier during SXSW at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas. Prior to attending the premier, David enjoyed a love breakfast with Jason Dohring (a.k.a. Logan Echolls) and his wife Lauren Dohring, who were at SXSW promoting the film.

VERBATIM
Verbatim_SXSW_Juniper_PostCongratulations to the director of Verbatim, Brett Weiner, for his short which premiered in Sundance and also played at SXSW! 

Verbatim is a short film which takes it’s script verbatim from a court report and the result is  funnier than fiction.
