JUNIPER POST MIXES “MINDLESS BEHAVIOR” DOCUMENTARY THEATRICAL DEBUTE

Theatrical documentary featuring live concert footage that must impress the fans just like it did in the live events? That was the exact situation we found ourselves in recently. We not only needed to clean-up the sound on all of the documentary footage of the band and interviews, the concert footage had to be remixed for the theater so it still had a live feel. After weeks of hard work with Juniper Post’s sound team, we were happy with the mix. 

 

We’ve had many features and documentaries translate well from the small Dolby certified mix stage we used for this project, but this time, we needed to recreate a live concert feel in a movie theater.   So Brian Robbins, Producer, decided let’s not take any chances.  Let’s hear this in one of the largest mixing stages in town and make sure we give the fans a live concert experience!

Brian has directed many movies mixed in the world renowned Hitchcock Theater at NBCUniversal in Universal City, CA.  So that’s where we went. (Picture above)

Fortunately, Juniper Post’s sound team, had taken the time and attention in advance to ensure the mix was in great shape before entering The Hitchcock Theater.   There’s no greater feeling than having your movie or documentary pass the test in one of the most prestigious mixing theaters in town!  This documentary is going to be exactly what the fans have been waiting to hear!

SOUND TRANSLATION: MAKING YOUR MOVIES AND TV SHOWS SOUND GOOD IN ALL VENUES IN TODAY’S ECONOMY 

WILL MY MOVIE SOUND GOOD IN ALL VENUES OR JUST IN THE ROOM WHERE IT WAS MIXED?  

This is a problem some filmmakers run into after they finish their sound mix and then hear it for the first time in a theater. “I thought my mix sounded good….”  In the sound industry this all falls under the heading of “Sound Translation” and by translation, we are referring to how the sound quality “translates” from the original mixing room to multiple theaters, home theaters or televisions.  It’s true that your mix will sound different when played in different locations. That’s just the laws of physics, but if your film sounded good in the mixing studio, it should still sounds good in other environments, providing the location you are now hearing it in is set up properly.  This is where professionals like Dolby come into play.

Why is sound translation so important to you and your movie?   A filmmaker needs confidence in what is being heard during the mixing process.  One solution is to mix in a room that is the size of a very large mixing theater which has been tuned to the same spec as a large movie theater.  However, most low-budget films and documentaries cannot afford the rates of larger theatrical mixing stages in today’s economy.  So many filmmakers are relying on a smaller mixing room, with the hopes that this mix will translate to a larger theater.

Russell Fisher’s documentary “Over Troubled Waters”, narrated by Ed Begley, Jr. premiered in Sacramento, CA August 8th, 2012 at the Crest Theater in Sacramento, CA! Over 400 people were in attendance including congressman George Miller, Congressman John Garamendi & Senator Lois Wolk.

Senator Lois Wolk was presented with the prestigious Delta Advocate award for her dedicated work to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.  Also, presented with this award was the film’s director, Russell Fisher, who introduced the film and gave a special thanks to Jason Sturgis, Director of Photography, Barbara Barrigan-Parilla, Executive Producer, Jane Wagner-Tyack, Writer, David Kitchens, Post-Production & Sound Supervisor, Ben Zarai, Composer and Ed Begley, Jr., Narrator.
