“In my opinion Juniper Post brought the action to life and it greatly enhanced the movie watching experience. When you shoot a film, especially horror or action, sound becomes a crucial element in the story telling and we were fortunate to have such an amazing team of professionals to create the right sound mix for Bullet.” – Carmen Cabana, Director of Photography

“Juniper took care of us, and we couldn’t be more grateful. They went above and beyond to make sure our film had the absolute best sound possible. It was a true pleasure working with the whole team, and I can’t wait to do it again!” – Khalil Sullins, Director

“LISTENING” written and directed by Khalil Sullins is a Listen Film production. “A team of genius-but-broke grad students invent mind-reading technology that destroys their lives and threatens the future of free-will itself.” – IMDb

Writer/Director Khalil Sullins
Producers          Jamal DeGruy | Travis Nicholson
                        Khalil Sullins | Pardis Sullins
Cast                  Amber Marie Bollinger
                        Leonard Kelly-Young | Mykayla Sohn

Listening Juniper Post-low res-7-TEXT“From the inception of the idea for “Listening”, Khalil was committed to using every aspect of filmmaking to tell this story.  He provided us with the most in-depth sonic vision that I’ve ever had the pleasure of working on. The screenplay was conceived with sound in mind and the film was edited brilliantly by Howard Heard, keeping beats for sound events and pacing that allowed Sound Designer Steve Urban, MPSE, to unfurl sonic elements throughout the Listening ADR Session Juniper postshow revealing Khalil’s scripted intent. And really, what sound editor wouldn’t want to work on a film called “Listening”?!” – David Barber, M.P.S.E., Supervising Sound Editor /
Re-recording Mixer, Juniper Post, Inc.

“Juniper Post brought our film to life.  With a movie called, “Listening,” sound was of the utmost importance, and Juniper knocked it out of the park.  David Kitchens, Owner / Supervising Sound Editor, David Barber, Re-recording mixer / Supervising Sound Editor and the whole team handled the film not just with professionalism, but with a real love and caring perfectionism…
“The team at Juniper has so much talent and experience that I always felt totally at ease knowing our film would have fantastic sound. They have some of the best in the business in all aspects of post-production sound, mixing, editing, ADR, foley, design, all of it.
“Sound design was incredibly important to our film… What does a brain-computer-interface sound like if you could get inside of it?… sound designer Steve Urban, dove into this world head on, and created some truly spectacular soundscapes that not only sounded cool, but enhanced the story… Juniper made my dreams possible. They not only executed, but contributed creatively to make “Listening” sound better than I ever could have imagined.” – Khalil Sullins, Director / Writer / Producer

Here’s what our sound team had to say about working on this project:

“There is something special about working on a real Western movie. The lack of modern materials and cell phones in the film feels fresh and new. It was great to create sounds for the old wood houses, revolvers and rifles, horses and wagons.

“Fortunately, next to my studio there is a big old barn, from the 1800’s.. and I was able to record the sounds of the doors, etc. to capture the right character of the old wood, handles, creaks and squeals so they fit in naturally with the final mix.

“And for the horses, a special thanks to my two sisters whose horses I recorded, they really add a lot of life to the film.” – Ken Skoglund, Sound FX Editor

“Mixing “The Redemption of Henry Myers” was an enjoyable challenge.  Clayton has shot an authentic old west period piece and it was very important that it sounded like one.  Sound Effects editor Ken Skoglund did a fantastic job with location recordings of old barns, live horses, gear, etc. that really brought the era to life.  The trick in the mix was eliminating the “production sound” from the production sound.  Generator hum, electrical hum, and other modern sounds that crept into the live sound had to be removed without sacrificing the vocal quality of the actors.  Achieving this took some time but in the end, we feel great about the final soundtrack of the film.” – David Barber, M.P.S.E., Supervising Sound Editor/Re-recording Mixer, Juniper Post, Inc.

Golden Reel Nomination: RISING FROM ASHES

February 5, 2014 by dkitchens Leave a Comment

Congratulations from Juniper Post to the “Rising from Ashes” sound team on their Golden Reel Nomination for Best Sound Editing: Documentary Feature Film!

RFA Congrats Nom

Director, T.C. Johnstone; Producer, Greg Kwedar; Producer/Narrator, Forest Whitaker

RFA 2GREGKWEDAR_BTSMy team and I are very proud of this film and the sound editing therein. Because much of the locations had extremely noisy environments, we had to clean up the dialogue and remove the distracting elements in the sound so the dialogue could be heard and understood.  This resulted in most of the environments and actions on the screen being completely recreated with Foley and Sound Effects by Juniper’s sound team. The detailed sequences of training and bike races were more than challenging.

IMG_1850To capture a realistic feel of the bike sounds, much of the Foley we recorded out doors. Later my team painstakingly matched the actions to synch perfectly with the images. Some of the sounds that had to be captured were mountain bike tires on various surfaces, shocks, bumps, splashes, all of which were recorded and then cut to match the action sequences in addition to crowds, ambiences, etc. It was hard work, but we had a blast!

The first 10 minutes of the film is a good example of this, in that it contains almost no natural sound from production but rather all actions were either augmented and/or recreated in Foley or sound effects. The director wanted the sound to be natural and authentic, in other words to maintain the sound and feel of a documentary film.

TeamRwanda2The comment from those who have seen the film in theaters has been, “How did you capture such good sound in those environments?” So we feel we achieved the director’s vision of a great sounding doc with the audiences believing that the great sound was captured live, even though we recreated almost all of it in sound editing. – David Kitchens, M.P.S.E.

The sound design that’s come together on this film is probably one of the aspects I am most proud of. Just listening to the film I hope tells a story on it’s own.” – T.C. Johnstone, Director (Click here to read TC’s quote in full and see prior Blog.)

nytlogo152x23“This documentary, covering six years in the development of Rwanda’s first national cycling team, is heartfelt. The scenery — described here as the Land of a Thousand Hills, ideal for the sport — is compelling. The lessons about professional cycling are detailed. And the title is earned by the attention drawn to the horrific Rwandan genocide of 1994, which haunts the athletes and has left their nation in emotional ruins. It’s an underdog story, which always has appeal.” By David DeWitt

Screen Shot 2014-01-28 at 5.13.27 PM“Narrated by Forest Whitaker and directed by T.C. Johnstone, “Rising from Ashes” offers a unique look at life in Rwanda. With the country rebuilding itself in the shadow of unspeakable violence, the next generation has matured into leaders and fathers, with these men hoping to distinguish themselves after lives pummeled by nightmares and personal loss. The production provides a history lesson on the history of the Hutu and Tutsi conflict, helping to establish the private pain shared by the cyclists, but the majority of the documentary clings to positivity and a sense of national pride, detailing the aspirations of a Rwandan cyclist such as Adrien, who finds himself with renewed function and drive, blossoming under Boyer’s tough-but-fair leadership as he transforms a hobby into a lifestyle.” – Brian Orndorf
